Skoda Octavia, a Little Jewel with Plastic Parts
The new Skoda Octavia A5 is a marvellous car, well equipped with a large number of high performance plastic parts which give the vehicle a very special appeal. For example, in the passenger compartment, the glove compartment and pockets are made of SABIC®PP Compound 7705: an aesthetic, talc-filled polypropylene compound. The special combination of various additives is just as scratch-resistant as unfilled polypropylene. As a result, painting of interior parts is unnecessary, resulting in substantial savings
Exceptional Characteristics
SABIC®PP Compound 7705 possesses outstanding properties which make it easy to process. The low shrinkage and linear expansion coefficient ensure form dimensional stability, even at extreme temperatures (tested from -30°C to 85°C). In addition, this grade boasts high rigidity and impact resistance necessary to withstand the crash test (knee impact). It can be easily welded and, also meets strict odor and emission norms. For Skoda, the compounds are delivered in three special colors: Onyx, Achat and Ivory.
Lower Costs
SABIC®PP Compound 7705 is unique. It enables manufacturers to produce at lower costs without sacrificing the performance of their product. Cost-saving is achieved due to the shorter cycle time, which is realized during injection molding thanks to the excellent flow of the material. The broad processing window of the material means that molds can be made with fewer injection points, while molding machines can be used with lower clamping force. SABIC®PP Compound 7705 is already being used by Volkswagen, for example, in the production of door panels for the Golf A5.
Lighter and Stronger
SABIC®STAMAX is used for the load bearing component of the instrument panel of the Skoda Octavia. Made of polypropylene reinforced with long glass fiber, SABIC®STAMAX is the answer to the demand of the automobile industry for a strong, lightweight alternative to steel. SABIC®STAMAX is easy to process, has a high rigidity and tensile strength, is very impact resistant and withstands high and low temperatures. The material is characterized by a low expansion coefficient and, combined with good flow, ensures excellent shot-to-shot consistency. Relatively low price per liter, in combination with high load bearing capacity, results in an attractive total cost.
Optimal Scratch Performance
The central console in the Skoda Octavia is made of unfilled highly crystalline polypropylene: SABIC®PP CX02-82. This grade boasts an exceptional scratch performance and, thanks to high crystallinity and high stiffness, is comparable with a 20% talc-filled polypropylene. Cost-saving is achieved here as well, thanks to its lighter weight. Further cost-efficiency for the customer lies in the fact that the material is delivered in its natural color. The customer himself can use the desired color master-batch during the molding process. As a result of applying such a concept (natural material color + color master-batch), the customer only needs one silo to store raw materials, which reduces logistical costs. In addition, switching from one color to another becomes very simple.
